Conditionals

Zero Conditional

General or scientific facts and definitions.

FORM: IF+ PRESENT/ PRESENT

If you mix oil and water, oil floats.

First Conditional

Real or likely conditions in the present or future.

FORM: IF+ PRESENT/FUTURE (WILL)

If you celebrate a birthday party, you'll get a lot of presents.

Second Conditional

Impossible, unlikely or hypothetical conditions in the present or future.

FORM: IF+ PAST SIMPLE OR PAST CONTINUOUS/WOULD

If you won the lottery, you would be a billionaire

Third Conditional

Hypothetical conditions in the past and their results in the past.

FORM: IF+ PAST PERFECT OR PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS/WOULD+HAVE+PAST PARTICIPLE

If you had studied for the exam, you would  have passed it.

Other Conditional Structures

Unless/In case/ As long as/ Provided (that)

UNLESS = except if or if.....not ( EXCEPTE SI...)

I'll arrive on time UNLESS the train is delayed.

​

IN CASE= because he/she/it might...(EN CAS QUE)

​

I'll bring an umbrella IN CASE it rains.

​

AS LONG AS= If or Only if ( MENTRES, NOMÉS SI ....)

​

AS LONG AS I'm happy, my parents don't care what job I do.

​

PROVIDED (THAT) = If or Only if ( SI, MENTRES, NOMÉS SI ...)

​

PROVIDED  (THAT) I'm happy, my parents don't care what job I do.

Formal Conditionals= Inverted conditionals

In formal conditionals you can find the conditional form first:

SHOULD the situation worsen, the United Nations is prepared to send in a peacekeeping force.

WERE the situation to worsen, the United Nation would be prepared to send in ...
